Big Rig Show nets $5,000 for Shriners

FRANKLIN GROVE — The third annual Franklin Grove Summer Harvest Festival Big Rig Truck Show held Saturday, Aug. 3, raised more than $5,000 in donations for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals of Chicago. The strength of the show was a good cause, a superior volunteer effort, beautiful weather and fun time for the whole family.
More than 55 trucks were entered in the show including semi tractors, working trucks and a number of antique trucks of various types. The show was held at the Atkinson Trucking lot on IL Rt. 38 at the west edge of Franklin Grove. Many of the men that made up this year’s show crew are Franklin Grove area truckers who own their own trucks and several of their friends who support them and the children’s research and care provided by the Shriners Hospitals.
Voting for the winning truck was on the basis of one penny per vote placed in a bucket near each truck. The truck that won the most votes and raised the most money, was honored as best of the show. This year’s winner was Craig Betcher, of Annawan, who entered his 1965 Peterbuilt 351A. He spent six years bringing the Peterbuilt back to show winning condition.
A highlight for the younger set was the inflatable S-Kid Loader bouncy exhibit where the children were able to jump around and have a great time. T-shirts, hats, truck accessories, model trucks and other related items were available to purchase.
Dave Brevoort of Oregon won more than $700 in the 50/50 drawing and donated his winnings back to the show proceeds which went exclusively to Shriners.
Brian and David Atkinson were quick to praise the efforts and contributions of all of the friends, family, volunteers and sponsors who helped put on the show. Pictures of the 2013 Big Rig Show are available at the Big Rig Show of Franklin Grove Facebook page.

Franklin Grove-Big Rig Show Nets $3,500 for Shriners Children’s Hospital
Why a Big Rig Truck for Shriners Hospital for Children? Well Trucking is their business and Brian thought it would be a good way for them to give back a little of what the Shriners did for his brother when he got burned.
Despite the bad weather( winds so strong the Band stand blow over) they had 50 truck show up and everyone had such a good time , that plans are in the works for next years show with the Harvest Festival. Brian said the they would like to keep it as a fund raiser for the Shriners Hospital and double the size of the show and dollars raised.
The following article is from the Ashton,Ill Gazette Aug. 9,2012
BY: BOB LOGAN — The Franklin Grove Harvest Festival 2nd Annual Big Rig Show raised approximately $3,500 in proceeds to be donated to the Shriner Children’s Hospital in Chicago according to Brian Atkinson, on behalf of the Big Rig Show Committee.
Atkinson attributed the success of the venture to the cooperation of the show sponsors that included family and friends of Atkinson Trucking, Morely Signs, Keith Shoemaker Trucking, Appelquist Farms and Trucking, H.F. Gehant Banking, White Diamond Detail Products, Whatever it Takes Repair, Tony Brown Trucking, Sensient, Northern Grain Marketing, Lance’s Refrigeration, Dilbeck’s Canvas Shop and eCreative Printing.
The funds were collected through a 50/50 drawing in which winner John Loomis of Franklin Grove turned his winnings of more than $900 back so that all proceeds of the drawing went to Shriners. Additional funds were raised by a vote of show attendees for the show’s outstanding truck by placing a contribution in the bucket in front of each truck. The prize went to Steve Eisenberg whose truck raised the most funds for Shriners.
Eisenberg’s Model 359 Peterbilt was recognized as the best working truck of the show, the Model 379 Peterbilt truck owned by John Neal.
The Cal Stage Band provided live music for the Big Rig Show until the big wind.
Festival activities began wth entries to the Art Show at the Winifred Knox Memorial Library on Thursday afternoon and closed with activities at Atlasta park on Sunday evening which incorporated the Community Chorus’ Concert in the Park, recognition of festival honorees, and raffle drawings.
All military veterans were the honorees of the 2012 festival and were recognized according to the war or time period they served at Sunday night’s closing activities. They were also recognized at the festival parade on Saturday evening.
The 32nd Living History Antique Equipment Show featured several hundred farm tractors, working exhibits and a host of labor saving devices used around the farm that made the midwest the breadbasket of the world.
